Moses in the promised land
~Numbers 20:12 And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron, Because ye believed me not, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.
Considering the responsibility and the heavy burden Moses had been carrying for a number of years now, I had always felt that this was somewhat of a severe punishment from the hands of God, though I now understand that God is a just Judge. Moses will later get to see the promised land (Deut. 34) from the mountain of Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, just before his death. It is Joshua who leads the people into the promised land, as vowed by the Lord.
The story, however, does not end there.
~Mark 9:2-4 And after six days Jesus taketh with him Peter, and James, and John, and leadeth them up into an high mountain apart by themselves: and he was transfigured before them. And his raiment became shining, exceeding white as snow; so as no fuller on earth can white them. And there appeared unto them Elias with Moses: and they were talking with Jesus.
And there comes God's grace. This time, Moses is not overlooking the promised land with Lord, his feet, along with the feet of the Lord, are now touching the land flowing with milk and honey. Amazing Grace! Moses gets to stand in the promised land after all!!

In the promised land and with such company, too!
Moses reminds me a bit of the kids I work with. I'll tell them to carry the balls they are playing with to put them away. Half of the balls get kicked or thrown anyway. Sometimes people get hit because they don't do what we ask. We have reasons for telling them to do something a certain way, and so does God. God wants us to do things His way, not ours. When we take matters into our own hands, there will be consequences. It is such a good thing that we serve a merciful God. The punishment really could be much worse!

Excellent point, Sarah.
Typologically, the rock represents Christ being bruised for our iniquities.
Christ offered only one sacrifice for sin, therefore the rock could only be struck once. Moses acted out of unbelief in striking it more than once.
Every Blessing in Christ

Angie, great point. As God's little children, we often act the same.
Thanks, Matthew. My Pastor had explained that before, which makes sense as to why the Lord was angry with Moses. And yet, His mercy abounds!
